MMPs are Matrix Metalloproteinases, inactive enzymes in dentin that are activated by acid, and degrade the hybrid layer over time. Independent studies have shown that MMPs are inhibited by endogenous inhibitors, such as 2% Chlorhexidine or BAC (benzalkonium chloride).
