PORCELAIN ETCHANT
9.5% Buffered Hydrofluoric Acid Gel

GENERAL INFORMATION

PORCELAIN ETCHANT is a 9.5% buffered hydrofluoric acid gel that must be handled with extreme care (See precautions below). Do not use this product until you have thoroughly read and understood these instructions.

PORCELAIN ETCHANT improves the mechanical bond between porcelain and adhesive/cement by increasing the surface area of the porcelain. The effect is similar to sandblasting but is more controlled and effective.

NOTE: Do not re-etch restorations that have been etched by the lab. Over etching porcelain may cause weakening of porcelain or degradation of bond strength. PORCELAIN ETCHANT will microscopically roughen porcelain and glass surfaces. As such, care must be taken to avoid having the etchant contact glazed porcelain surfaces since these surfaces will lose their gloss.

The principle use of 9.5% PORCELAIN ETCHANT is for etching porcelain prior to:
1. Cementation of porcelain veneers, crowns, inlays, and onlays.
2. Repair of porcelain restorations.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE

PRECAUTIONS: Hydrofluoric acid is a very powerful and aggressive chemical. It is a severe eye and tissue irritant. If accidentally splashed into the eye, flush with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention. Hydrofluoric acid also releases a vapor that irritates respiratory passageways. Chronic inhalation of fumes is dangerous and can cause damage. Extreme care must be taken to protect the patient, operator and assistant. These individuals must wear protective eyewear. The operator and assistant must wear protective gloves. Rubber dam isolation must be used for intraoral porcelain repair.

If PORCELAIN ETCHANT comes in contact with other tissues: rinse affected area immediately with copious amounts of water for several minutes. Injury may result if etchant is allowed to remain on the skin or mucosa for any length of time.

Bisco's 9.5% PORCELAIN ETCHANT has been buffered, gelled and packaged to minimize problems, provided that it is used in accordance with these instructions. Do not use this product until you have thoroughly read and understood these instructions.

ETCHING ALL-CERAMIC RESTORATIONS PRIOR TO CEMENTATION

1. Protective eyewear and gloves must be worn by operator and assistant.

2. If the lab hasn't already etched the restoration, apply PORCELAIN ETCHANT to the dried internal surface for 1-2 minutes. Care must be taken to avoid having the etchant contact glazed porcelain surfaces since these surfaces will lose their gloss.

NOTE: Not all ceramic systems are etchable. Contact your lab for manufacturer's instructions.

3. Rinse with copious amounts of water to remove etchant and air dry. The etched surface may appear dull and frosty.

4. Apply one to two thin coats of silane, such as Bisco's PORCELAIN PRIMER, with a brush to the etched internal surface of the restoration and allow to dwell for 30 seconds. Dry with air syringe.

5. Use an adhesive system, such as ALL-BOND®* 2, ONE-STEP®* or ONE-STEP PLUS, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

6. Continue with cementation according to the manufacturer's instructions.

REPAIR OF ALL-CERAMIC RESTORATIONS AND SURFACES WITH EXPOSED METAL

1. Protective eyewear must be worn by patient, operator and assistant. Protective gloves must be worn by operator and assistant.

2. Freshen and roughen the porcelain repair site by using a diamond bur. (Remove any old composite remaining from previous repairs.)

3. Isolate the area to be etched with a rubber dam. Bisco's BARRIER GEL should be placed where etching is not desired.

4. PRECAUTION: Confirm that syringe tip is adequately placed and tightly attached. Test that etchant is flowing freely from the syringe tip by expressing a small amount onto a mixing pad. If there is resistance to flow, DO NOT proceed. Replace tip and test flow again before using on patient.

5. Apply PORCELAIN ETCHANT to the dried repair site for 1-2 minutes. To evacuate hydrofluoric acid vapors, hold evacuator tip adjacent to repair site. Monitor the etch site throughout the entire procedure.

NOTE: Not all ceramic systems are etchable. Contact your lab for manufacturer's instructions.

6. Rinse with copious amounts of water to remove etchant. Then air dry. The etched surface may appear dull and frosty.

7. Apply one to two thin coats of silane, such as Bisco's PORCELAIN PRIMER, with a brush to the etched surface of the restoration and allow to dwell for 30 seconds. Dry with air syringe.

8. Use an adhesive system, such as ALL-BOND 2, ONE-STEP or ONE-STEP PLUS, according to the manufacturer's instructions.

9. Continue with the porcelain repair applying Bisco's OPAQUER on exposed metal and the appropriate composite, such as ÆLITE™* Aesthetic Enamel, according to the composite manufacturer's instruction.
