PREPARATION AND FINISHING BURS

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS

All instruments have been developed and constructed for their specific use. Improper use can lead to damage to the tissue, premature wear, destruction of the instruments, danger to the user, patient or third parties.

Proper Use:

  • Make sure that only technically and hygienically perfect and cleaned turbines, handpieces and contra-angles are used.
  • Chuck the instruments as deeply as possible.
  • The instrument must be rotating before contact is made with the workpiece.
  • Avoid jamming and using the instrument as a lever -- increased risk of breakage.
  • Depending on the operation, safety glasses are recommended.
Improper use leads to increased risk and inferior results.

Recommended Speeds:

  • Observe the instrument-specific speed recommendations to achieve perfect results.
  • The maximum permissible speed is indicated on the package, as well as in the chart below.
    The general rule is:
    • the larger the working part the lower the speed
    • the larger the working part the higher the contact pressure

Not observing the maximum permissible speed leads to an increased safety risk.

Operating Pressure:

  • Excessive operating pressure must be avoided.
  • This can lead to damage and breakouts on the working parts of bladed instruments. Moreover, increased heat generation occurs.
  • Increased operating pressure may lead to stripping of the grit on abrasive instruments or to clogging of the instruments and increased heat generation. In the extreme case, instrument breakage may occur.

Cooling:

  • In order to avoid undesirably high heat generation during preparation, sufficient water cooling (50ml/min at minimum) must be provided.
Insufficient water cooling can cause irreversible damage to the tooth and the surrounding tissue.

Elimination of Worn Instruments:

  • Damaged and deformed blades cause vibrations and lead to breakouts on preparation margins and rough surfaces.
  • Blank spots on the surface of diamond instruments are an indication of abrasive grit wear and reduced cutting efficiency. These deficiencies lead to excessive temperature and damage to the pulp.
  • Bent or "out of true" instruments must be eliminated immediately.

Dull and damaged instruments lure the dentist into using higher operating pressure which results in increased operating temperature. This may lead to thermal pulp damage.

STORAGE, DISINFECTION, CLEANING & STERILIZATION
  • Before first use on the patient and immediately after each use, all rotary instruments must be disinfected, cleaned and (if necessary and material-compatible) sterilized. Before first use, instruments should be stored in their original packages at room temperature protected against dust and humidity.
  • Rotary instruments should be stored in bur blocks in hygienic condition. The same applies to sterilized instruments and instruments in sterile packages. During storage, the instruments must be protected against dust, humidity, recontamination.
  • For instruments which are not corrosion-protected, disinfecting and cleaning agents with anticorrosive should be used.
  • Avoid any contact with H202 (hydrogen peroxide). The carbide working parts would be attacked and damaged; thus the working life is reduced.
  • Rotary instruments made of tungsten carbide and stainless steel instruments may corrode in cold sterilization solution leading to discoloration and to reduced service life.
  • Recommendations for use, immersion time and suitability of disinfecting and cleaning substances for certain instrument types can be seen in the manufacturer's instructions.

As far as disinfection and sterilization is concerned, care should be taken that the selected methods are suited for the respective instrument.
